Multi use games areas: LED lighting

Replacing failing floodlights at two school MUGA pitches in South Ayrshire, so community activities could carry on after dusk.

The challenge

We were very pleased to help replace the floodlighting for these outdoor MUGA pitches in South Ayrshire. The pitches are used during the day by schools and are part of community life, but without the correct light levels (especially in Scotland) many activities were not taking place. Lights had been failing gradually, to the point that the pitches were not in use after dusk.

What we did

Our electrical supervisors met council officers and caretakers at the 2 schools, and testing confirmed that some lights and their cut-out fuses were completely broken. We were able to price quickly and keenly, and had staff with the correct IPAF training, experience and knowledge to get both jobs done within 2 weeks of being approached.

As on many projects, we spoke to lighting manufacturers and representatives to make sure we had a suitable product with a warranty that would do the job, and compared options to get the best value for the client. Replacing the lamps alone was an option, but our investigation showed there was no value or guarantee that the old, expensive-to-run fittings would last. Remedial cable work was carried out, and we added a timeclock at one of the pitches.

A year later, these are still going without us receiving a single phone call, and the modern LEDs light up every night.

Lighting that's failing or costing too much to run?
